CONTRIBUTIVE COMMONWEALTH

RE-IMAGINING HOUSING AND WORK

The Contributive Commonwealth is an intentional community born out of a housing campaign workshop group which sought to reimagine living arrangements. It was based on the ideas of providing rent-free and ownership-free accommodation to members including:

  • Rent-Free Living: In exchange for free accommodation, members actively participated in the running of the programme, this included Connecting Cultures and Creative Connectors
  • Pooled Income: Instead of traditional salaries, pooled income from community activities supported the provision of stipends to resident members.
  • Collective Governance: Our decision-making was based on a holacratic approach, ensuring that every member had a voice in shaping the community’s direction.

The building at Folklore Hoxton was not big enough to carry out a full demonstration of the Contributive Commonwealth. Therefore as part of the legacy we are planning on building a first floor extension that could house a temporary Contributive Commonwealth for young homeless people.

IMPACT

The 3C Demonstration was more than just a community experiment—it was a catalyst for social change. By reintegrating housing and employment it set the path for the development of a sustainable intentional community to flourish.

  • Contributive Commonwealth redefined living and working arrangements, emphasising collective well-being over individual gain by fostering sustainability and resilience through a circular economy.

SUSTAINABILITY

Beyond the current building, the 3C approach is expanding to establish a larger, more permanent homestead.
